Bruins bounce back from Beaver blemish to blast Buffs 42-14 behind Brett Hundley’s 4 Touchdowns, thus avoiding another stain on their now 4-and-1 record
UCLA Redshirt Freshman QB Brett Hundley has a confidence and poise uncommon for inexperienced underclassmen, and he used those traits on Saturday to lead UCLA to their 4th win in 5 games, 42-14, over Colorado. Sure, the Buffaloes suck, but any time the Bruins can go on the road and slaughter a Pac-12 opponent, a well-deserved collective sigh can be heard emanating from Wetwood. The Bruins have a history of choking in hostile territory, but that tradition was NOT carried on in Boulder.
The Bruins built a 21-7 lead in the first half, because the Buffs can’t tackle, and because Hundley can find open men when he has time. Jonathan Franklin ran through a series of Colorado arm tackles, as the Bruins seemed to average about 7 yards a rush. That set up short 2nd and 3rd downs which Hundley converted with short passes.
The Bruins extended the lead to 28-7 in the 3rd, as Hundley got his fourth TD — 2 running and 2 passing. Damien Thigpen and Jordon James added late Touchdowns to complete the Bruin scoring (since Ka’imi Fairbairn missed a Field Goal), as UCLA was never threatened. The Offense was rolling in a typically balanced way, and the Defense was stiffening when necessary. At first it looked like the Bruin Secondary was going to have troubles, as Aaron Hester and Sheldon Price both gut burrned early. But more Bruin pressure and better strategizing effectively shut down the Buffs. Anthony Barr and Damien Holmes looked like the main contributors, with Stan McKay getting another Pick, and Dalton Hilliard and Tevin McDonald forcing fumbles on a solid hit, and on an intentional ball-poke. Randall Goforth also played a role, repeatedly being in the right place at the right time.
Wide Receivers Shaquelle Evans and Jerry Johnson both struggled holding on to the ball today, and the third guy, Devin Lucien, broke his collarbone and is out for now, so it will be up to the two aforementioned starters to step up. Speaking of stepping up:
Here are 40 photos from last Saturday, in celebration of a convincing victory.
