Dim Floyd turns down ‘zona to stay with sc

Just ignore everything below.  The Media got ahead of themselves yesterday, ASSUMING that Tim Floyd would accept the offer to become the Head Coach at Arizona.  It was an understandable assumption, because, who in their right mind would choose sc over ‘zona?

The conspiracy theory is that Mike Garrett got wind of Floyd’s impending move — to a Pac-10 Rival — and threatened to send him home to mother in a cardboard box (as the Floyd song goes).  Not one to inspire the wrath of the head of O.J.U., Floyd decided to stay.  Now, if sc loses their top three players early to the Draft, Floyd is going to be wishing that Garrett wasn’t so hands-on.   This whole scenario should add some spice to the barely-existant sc-Arizona rivalry, as Floyd gets back to aspiring to the Wildcats’ perennial also-ran status as the so-called “standard” of the Conference.

It must be fun for the trojans to know that their Coach has got one eye on the Want Ads, and one foot out the door, having talked to Memphis as well as Arizona.  Floyd said that he wanted to do something special at a first-rate school, but then backpedaled and said that he’ll also have fun building something from nothing [at a second-rate school].  Floyd and usc deserve each other.
